An unprecedented placemaking initiative by the Economic Development Board of Singapore, Hjgher was presented with 20,000 sqft of indoor and outdoor areas in Gillman Barracks, a former military camp converted to Asia’s contemporary arts destination. Inspired by Warhol’s factory, Hjgher conceived The U Factory, a temporal experimental platform dedicated to discussion, exchange and execution of shared ideas. Committed to its cause, Hjgher relocated its entire studio to The U Factory, and from October 2013 to January 2014, created and managed the entire space with over 3 months with curated content from art, film, music, design, food, books and more.
The U Factory was an execution of many inaugural firsts, from the largest and first ever Monocle Shop pop-up store in Singapore, to the first ever Singapore Art Book Fair, to the first ever student exhibition across all tertiary schools in Singapore, The U Showcase, to never seen before restaurant experiences of Ramen Burger, a Laksa Bar, a Café/Cocktail Bar by Maison Ikkoku, and concerts by homegrown artists under the Kitchen label and more. Throughout the entire period, Hjgher worked with international and local creatives to conduct workshops, seminars and talks, sought and managed artists for concerts, managed the Creative Cultures retail space, ran weekend fairs and markets, and even pulled in international and local brand partners share in their co-working and collaborative workspace.
