Creative Cultures: The Singapore Showcase showcases the work of Singaporeʼs creative disciplines through the mediums of publication, film, and web, designed by Underscore and curated by the esteemed, Yoichi Nakamuta. Featuring more than 100 Singaporean creatives ranging from fields of art, design, music and photography, the publication was first launched at the DESIGNTIDE TOKYO 2012.
With a 10sqm exhibition space, a clear demarcation was created by a white cuboid frame structure, effectively creating a distinction from the rest of the international exhibitors, while retaining a sense of openness without walls, welcoming visitors to step in. The frame also served as a holding structure for suspended wooden swings clad in leather–a display for the products that were specially curated for the exhibition. Featured works were documented in Creative Cultures: The Singapore Showcase publication, including original products by Foundry, Hans Tan, Kwodrent, Made for SAM, Outofstock, The U Store and VW+BS. The heavy objects on the delicate swing structure conveyed a sense of fragility and boldness, describing the state of Singapore’s creative culture at its infancy, with freedom and power to decide its history and future.
The exhibition took place from 31st October 2012 – 4th November 2012 at DESIGNTIDE TOKYO 2012 at the Tokyo Midtown Hall.
