The Cheese Artisans deliver a wide array of fine European cheese directly from farms to established restaurants and hotels. In conjunction with their first retail/bistro down Greenwood Avenue, Hjgher was commissioned to develop the full brand architecture including the logo, fonts, visual brand elements, as well as the interior design of a cheese maturing room, fromagerie and cheese bar, to ensure a wholistic and impactful brand experience.
Inspired by the classical European stacking of textured cheese blocks, it was Hjgher’s intention to inject a contemporary interior language, unlike the usual and expected fromageries. With a Memphis approach to the various arcs, circles and quadrant shapes of cheese blocks, textured marble and cement for the various cheese types, and brushed brass from their brand colours, it all adds to the smart play of interlocking and conjoined stacked forms, the cement screed flooring that rises to house the chilled counters, and the smart use of corrugated glass panels to screen the work space.
Introducing a colour palate of muted pink walls, midnight blue retail shelving and emerald green seating, polished brass fittings provide a skeletal structure to dimension of the space, from the table tops to the brand elements of arcs, circles and quadrants embedded into the flooring. Illuminating the dining area is the customised long centerpiece lighting of corrugated glass and brass, that run parallel to the main communal table and the customised marble and brass wall lamps, that mark the banquet seats.
The layout sees a clear separation of the left retail space that ends with the cheese maturing room and the right dining area with a five metre long communal table that connects another five metres of the bar area, to allow for a smooth and uninterrupted flow.
“The cheese maturing process is a delicate orchestra of temperature, timing, weight, tenderness, and much more. But the results when done right… perfection. We did all we could to consider all the variables, all the details when designing for The Cheese Artisans and hopefully, the results are proof of our “maturing” process together with them.”
