Maison Ikkoku is set in the heart of Kampong Glam. Drawing inspiration from the translation of its name, “House of a Moment”, was crafted to depict a surreal experience, a moment where limbo occurs and time seemingly floats at a standstill. A café, boutique and a cocktail bar make up the shophouse of three levels.
Paying homage to its surroundings, the shophouse was stripped down to its origins: brick walls and exposed industrial copper piping used for lighting is a recurring feature throughout all levels. Custom-made olive chesterfield ottoman sets and wooden wainscoting echo the environment’s colonial past. A mixture of common raw materials sourced from the nearby area was introduced into the space and reconstructed with new functions, grooved steel rebar usually used for flooring were custom-made into clothes racks, the cashier counter clad by gold metal sheets is reminiscent of a shipping container. These elements create a signature space that is authentic to Maison Ikkoku.
The intention was to use as little as possible by reusing as much as possible, keeping inline with the concept of sustainability and timelessness. Instead of fabricating new furniture, old antique cupboards were acquired to function within the space. Sawn off bottom halves are suspended from the ground level ceiling doubling as lighting and shelving displays. The top half sits at the exact spot of the second level, functioning as display for the boutique. The doors of the antique cupboard doors with their doorknobs, mirrors and keyholes left intact were reused as table tops and display mirrors for the boutique.
Aesthetically, the discarded cupboards provided the space with a transplanted history, given the “overdose of time” without having to wait for aging, which new furniture could not provide. Every part of the space was transformed into a unique unrepeatable piece, as every centimeter is different from the next. The organic variation within a unity, has not only aesthetic value, but it allows for the absorption of mistakes that an unskilled labor in a rather big volume might produce; it is idealism and pragmatism synthesized in a single environment.
