The U Press Nº9 is now available at more than 250 galleries, schools, retail outlets, restaurants, bookstores and cafés across Singapore.
This issue sees four visionary magazine makers—Penny Martin (The Gentlewoman), Theseus Chan (WERK), David Lane (The Gourmand) and Rob Alderson (Printed Pages)—take the cover to share their respective publishing journeys. Nguan gives us insight into the creative processes that underlie his signature style of photography, while Japanese curator Yoichi Nakamuta shares his thoughts on the art scene in Singapore.
Vincent Teng, owner of cafés like Punch and Ronin, talks about the importance of ambience in his establishments, while Elodie ruminates on the unique beauty of cookbooks. The centrefold features A Thing of Beauty by Dawn Ng, and is followed by conversations with Letitia Phay of gown atelier Time Taken to Make a Dress, Frederik Frede, co-founder of Freunde von Freunden, as well as the Teng family, who’ve been serving up their famous Tanglin Halt Original Peanut Pancake since the sixties. Guest contributor Lucky Peach introduces us to the street sausages of the world, while illustrator Lydia Yang (Oak & Bindi) rounds off the issue.
