Hjgher was commissioned by National Gallery Singapore to design a publication highlighting the themes surrounding Artist and Empire: (En)countering Colonial Legacies, an exhibition examining the subject of the British Empire through art, from Singapore and Southeast Asia’s perspective.
The book design parallels the subject matter, with two set of typography systems and layout design created to each represent the artists and the Empire, and how they encounter and counter each other. Large scale timeline posters were created as supplements to aid in situating 6 artists within the British Empire, charting their lives and artistic developments against the historical timeline.
Selected artworks from the exhibition are reproduced in print within the publication, and are presented alongside essays written by contemporary artists, provoking contemplation about national identity in art within the context of colonialism.
