This is not a tale of Robinson Crusoe — this is an art piece by our long-time favourite Julien Berthier from 2007, titled Love-Love. He ’sails’ the sea in this constantly sinking ship: a diminishing hope, a dying dream; yet he manages to inject his trademark quirkiness by making it safe and functional.
A life lesson learnt.

We have always been inspired by Julien’s great sense of french humor and cynicism. Be sure to check out his other work here.

It’s been a long time coming but we’re glad to say it’s all finally coming together now. What was in hindsight a simple love for print a couple of years ago, has now evolved into our first magazine publication and we’d be more than delighted if you could join us for the opening reception at Asylum, 6pm Thursday 26th Nov 2009.

We do hope to see you there.

After lakes and sand dunes, Ryan McGinley decided to explore wild caves last summer. This time round the photographer, with his crew and models had to crawl through intestine-like tunnels, along with their sparkles boxes and smoke machines and all the lighting equipments, to find the hidden realm beneath our earth.
No surprise here we still get to see fireworks, naked bodies and McGinley-esque people-falling-in-mid-air shots. No one, however, comes close to merging surreal landscapes and beautiful human bodies into a psychedelically constructed dream.

24 new colour photographs will be up for McGinley’s first UK solo show at Alison Jacques Gallery in London,
from 11 September to 8 October 2009.
The title of the show “Moonmilk” alludes to the crystalline deposits found on the walls of many caves; it was once believed that this substance was formed by light from celestial bodies passing through rock into darkened worlds below. McGinley describes his work as a journey, and his photographs form a “travel log” which captures his experiences across the American landscape. This particular adventure pushed his troop to new levels of bravery, testing the participantsʼ fortitude and endurance in hazardous conditions.

At a HJGHER party, we introduced a short story installation, “And she melts in visions of eternal day”, written and produced by us here at HJGHER.

Taking our cue from the cinematic experience of the 1940s, we wanted our audience to experience a live performance instead of simply watching a movie on screen. We had a narrator read the entire script while a live cellist accompanied her on set as she read along. The audience was treated to a projection of still images shot by Jovian Lim (Oats & Sparkle).
Jovian was given free reign to interpret the story as he envisioned it should be in his head, but what made this all the more interesting was that we did this in collaboration with Club21’s BLACKJACK. We picked out clothes from the BLACKJACK store that we felt would bring represent different acts of the story and Jovian shot it in his signature style.
“And she melts in visions of eternal day” will be published for the first time in conjunction with the launch of UNDERSCORE N°1: THE ___ ISSUE magazine.
All images shot by Jovian will be made ready for viewing on the Underscore website soon. Stay tuned.

Our contribution to the latest FL.ag magazine’s theme of AIDS was “Too Much Love Will Kill You”. The statement is obvious, so do remember to always rubber your ducky up before you dive in and also, please feel free to follow the simple “cut and fold” instructions to create your very own pop-up heart.

But in case you you didn’t already know, “Too Much Love Will Kill You” was one of the last songs performed by Freddie Mercury of Queen, before he died prematurely due to him being HIV+. This is our humble tribute to Freddie, the bonafide queen of Queen, one of the greatest performers to have ever graced our eyes and ears. You may have sniggered at his mane handlebar, been outraged by his second-skin outfits and gobsmacked by his ultra-drag antics, but you most definitely, without any doubt, would have sung along to his voice accompanied by Queen’s anthemic tunes.
PS: Do find time to google the lyrics and listen to the song. For any true genius who gave his all and died from it, deserves all due respect from us here at HJGHER.

Seems like only Ryan McGinley knows. And seems like only he knows how to capture the golden days of youth. The lost, the confused, the audacious, the insane, the ardent youth.

I Know Where the Summer Goes, Ryan McGinley’s latest exhibition, is running from the 3rd of April through the 3rd of May in NYC. Last summer, he took a beautiful and mesmerizing photographic journey with sixteen models and three assistants. Among the resulting 4000 rolls of film, or 150,000 photographs, fifty were chosen for the exhibit. The amateurish images were inspired by those in nudist magazines in the 60s and early 70s, and McGinley once again shows us what he’s best at. Emotional young adults frolicking in the middle of nowhere, against vast and surreal landscape, like how one’s youth was seemingly endless and dreamlike, and one morning when you wake up, it’s gone.
Go run wild in the golden field till your heart aches and never look back, and while you’re at it, go listen to I Know Where the Summer Goes by Belle and Sebastian, and be remembered that the youth is still with us as long as the summer comes back.

Along with 14 other artists/designers from Singapore, we were invited to participate in Dual City Sessions: Null.

We were tasked to produce a visual artwork using elements found in Singapore, based on the theme “- = +” (to subtract is to add). We finally submitted our artwork few days back, having worked on it for the past few weeks and were told earlier today that it had been sent to print.
Curated by the ever progressive Silnt, Dual City Sessions is a platform for international collaboration and cross-pollination from the diverse creative disciplines. It aims to showcase the collaborative effort between two creative communities, bringing together emerging and innovative practitioners in the field of art, fashion, design and music.
Having exhibited throughout Japan in cities such as Tokyo, Sapporo, Osaka and Nagoya. The first installment of Dual City Sessions marks the first overseas collaboration for null. This is the first time they are exhibiting out of Japan and also the first time it involves foreign artists.
Dual City Sessions launches at DesignTide Tokyo on the 30th October - 4th November 2007, and we’re crossing our fingers that we”ll be able to convince our clients that we”ll still be able to work from Tokyo during this period.

We just received our invites to the opening reception of the AIGA 50 Books / 50 Covers exhibition in New York.

Dear J, will be showcased during the exhibition at the National Design Center, followed by Next: AIGA Design Conference in Denver. In addition, selections become part of the AIGA Design Archives, and are documented in 365: AIGA Year In Design 28, an annual print publication. The physical artifacts join the AIGA Design Archives in the Denver Art Museum.
The exhibition starts today and runs through November 21, 2007. We’re unfortunately bound here by our work and won’t be able to make it (unless of course we dump everything and head over, which we just might). If you happen to be in New York during this period, please do drop by and give our book a little pat, rub and a flip.
Check out the AIGA 50 Books / 50 Covers 2007 selections.

Agathe de Bailliencourt’s 2nd exhibition at Taksu Gallery, Singapore, titled “Urban 64″ runs from 21 September till 11 October 2007. Her solo show will feature a series of her paintings done in Berlin in the last few months.

Agathe’s work is unnervingly poignant, unassumingly primal and unmistakably indelible. And if you ever chance upon meeting her in person, you will not fail to know why.
In adoration, always.
More about Agathe here.

We’ve long been big fans of Ron Mueck, and we were blown away when found this video, filmed during his residency at The National Gallery, London.

How he gave life to mere fiberglass and silicon. How he captured the intensity of an expectant woman coming to term. How he took kindly to patience and perfected the “imperfect” specimen of our human form. We are in truly in respectful awe.
