“We want Eclecticism at Paragon to look like no other shop…” as directed by the ever full-of-sunshine client, “…it must be something we wouldn’t have thought of ourselves.” Another interior design project that allowed us just enough creative freedom to stay true to ourselves while we redefined the most often mentioned adjectives during the project; “cute”, “feminine” and “vibrant”.

Inspired by the circus, carnivals and joyrides that never ever end at never never land, soft “feminine” colour hues were juggled with a considered random pattern of three distinct emerald shaped gems that playfully balanced the interior walls. This helped set the background for the precise positioning of the reinforced metal rings of “vibrant” gold, where a gloriously glamourous myriad of womenswear from plain strapless tees to floral jumpsuits, little knicker shorts to denim overcoats, hang upon its roller coaster rails, surreptitiously engineered by our team of scientists that profess physics on the construct of “cute”. And what could be cuter than an array of Ferruccio Laviani table lamps converted and strung from the ceiling in its metallic colour splendour?
Sneak a peek visit and don’t blame us if the bright white fitting rooms tips your decision in making that purchase. We would sleep in there if we could.

After several months of sourcing, sketching and conceptualising, Time Taken To Make A Dress, a made-to-measure women’s label is finally ready to be introduced, with an exhibition by the dressmakers themselves.

— Of vein skin and bone, a debut collection defined by fifteen artisanal pieces will be showcased within their workspace for an intimate setting. Come, share their pride and joy as the studio opens its doors to the public for the very first time this Saturday, 17 July, 7pm at 61 Niven Road. We guarantee that time would be well spent.

It took us about a month for it to finally sink in and we still can’t believe it.

A D&AD 2010 In Book Award for Entire Magazines in the Magazine and Newspaper Design category, placing Underscore with the rest of the international magazines we’ve stacked/aligned our shelves with; A Guide, Apartamento, Qompendium and not failing to mention Singapore’s own Werk and Guerillazine which gave Theseus from WORK, pencils last year.
The best part about it was that the jury was led by none other than the godfather of magazines/newspapers, Jeremy Leslie, Design Director of magCulture and co-curator of Colophon. They should knight him for raising the level of editorial design to where it is today.
Again, I know we’ve done this a million times over, but we would sincerely like to thank you everyone of you who’ve supported us with your constant support/encouragement, as well as naysaying/disapproval for we could have never have pressed on this far without you.
As we’re now breaking all laws of time/physics for N°2, we’re keen as candy to announce its launch in July/August. Kindly stay attuned.

We just received news that we won a Silver Award for the Spatial Category in Retail for Kith Café in the HKDA Asia Design Awards 2009. And the best part, Thomas Heatherwick was a judge. We’ve been huge fans of his organic work since Littlehampton’s East Beach Cafe.

We cannot thank the folk at Kith enough for the trust they bestowed upon us, with complete design freedom for their branding, interior and furniture. We really wanted Kith to not just be another café, but a physical and emotional experience that could well justify their sincerity in doing what they do best, coffee (and our current favourite, kith’s special hot dog) from the heart.
So if you catch us there this week, be sure to ask for your free cappuccinos, on us. See you at Kith!

It’s been a long time coming but we’re glad to say it’s all finally coming together now. What was in hindsight a simple love for print a couple of years ago, has now evolved into our first magazine publication and we’d be more than delighted if you could join us for the opening reception at Asylum, 6pm Thursday 26th Nov 2009.

We do hope to see you there.

With hard electro influences from Boys Noize, Teenage Bad Girl and Digitalism to uplifting trance from Above & Beyond and Gareth Emery, DJ Phay, a former classical cellist and self-taught boy wonder debuted his live set for a HJGHER party, in conjunction with VUTOPIA at Velvet Underground, alongside Zouk resident, DJ Hong.

For all of you who have been requesting for DJ Phay’s next performance, do sign up here and we’ll be sure to keep you informed. In the meantime, you can always listen to his mix here.

At a HJGHER party, we introduced a short story installation, “And she melts in visions of eternal day”, written and produced by us here at HJGHER.

Taking our cue from the cinematic experience of the 1940s, we wanted our audience to experience a live performance instead of simply watching a movie on screen. We had a narrator read the entire script while a live cellist accompanied her on set as she read along. The audience was treated to a projection of still images shot by Jovian Lim (Oats & Sparkle).
Jovian was given free reign to interpret the story as he envisioned it should be in his head, but what made this all the more interesting was that we did this in collaboration with Club21’s BLACKJACK. We picked out clothes from the BLACKJACK store that we felt would bring represent different acts of the story and Jovian shot it in his signature style.
“And she melts in visions of eternal day” will be published for the first time in conjunction with the launch of UNDERSCORE N°1: THE ___ ISSUE magazine.
All images shot by Jovian will be made ready for viewing on the Underscore website soon. Stay tuned.

When we were approached to design the identity and interior for a cafe, the owners had no name for it, no location, a limited budget and they wanted to open in 6 weeks.
So, perhaps it could have been their foretelling vision of creating a new culture that played a fond tune to us, their relentless faith in us being the only ones who could do it (or so they led us to believe), the unbelievable upper-cut through the milk, side-kick to the back of the head, buddha-zen froth timing, drunken-monkey shaolin-hands for a perfect triple Rosetta, consistent in every cup of their coffee, or just the simple fact that we all shared one common goal; to build something pure, authentic and from the heart.
Do drop by Kith and have a cuppa, or two, and hopefully we got it right with you too.

If you’re interested in our design insight for Kith, there’s a small section in their G’day from Kith blog

Our contribution to the latest FL.ag magazine’s theme of AIDS was “Too Much Love Will Kill You”. The statement is obvious, so do remember to always rubber your ducky up before you dive in and also, please feel free to follow the simple “cut and fold” instructions to create your very own pop-up heart.

But in case you you didn’t already know, “Too Much Love Will Kill You” was one of the last songs performed by Freddie Mercury of Queen, before he died prematurely due to him being HIV+. This is our humble tribute to Freddie, the bonafide queen of Queen, one of the greatest performers to have ever graced our eyes and ears. You may have sniggered at his mane handlebar, been outraged by his second-skin outfits and gobsmacked by his ultra-drag antics, but you most definitely, without any doubt, would have sung along to his voice accompanied by Queen’s anthemic tunes.
PS: Do find time to google the lyrics and listen to the song. For any true genius who gave his all and died from it, deserves all due respect from us here at HJGHER.

We decided to unfold ourselves with something close to us. Something intimate. Something familiar. Something honest. A piece of paper and a pair of hands — how we start every story and every journey — with these we tell a tale in a spectrum of hue.
Welcome.

Given 20 secs for 20 slides (6 mins 40 secs in total) for the first Pecha Kucha Night in Singapore, come hear us gloat about how we artfully tip-toe into the office when we’re late every morning, have long lunches with the additional 5 teabreaks a day, and skillfully surf design blogs and Martha’s recipes when boss is not looking. He’s probably doing that himself.

Pecha Kucha (the sound of Japanese chit-chatting) Night was conceived in 2003 as a place for young designers to meet, network, and show their work in public. Devised by Astrid Klein and Mark Dytham (Klein Dytham architecture), it is the first time Pecha Kucha happens in Singapore, and we’ve been fortunate enough to be given this opportunity to present.
So see you there!

After the eat-and-be-merry-party-season, Harmony Korine is looking refreshing for Marc Jacobs. We are no big fans of MJ but this beautiful LCA-esque shot by Juergen Teller definitely changed our mind a little.
